Top 10 of 2017 ~ Missy’s Picks

2017 – what a year! We started this blog, went to Book Con and Boston Teen Author Festival, and I went to New York Comic Con! It was a very good year for a lot of books!

I read 75 books (including novellas to meet that goal, but shhhh, Goodreads counts it so, so do I!) and 23,210 pages. Not too shabby! A majority of these were audiobooks – I don’t have a lot of time to sit down and read, but I do drive a lot so that is my “reading” time.

Without further ado, here are my Top 10 books of 2017!

1. Nevernight & Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff

PLEASE BURY ME WITH THESE BOOKS I AM SO IN LOVEEEEE. I waited to read Nevernight until right before Godsgrave was released. Just incase, you know, I became obsessed and wanted to binge both books. And. Well. Good thinking past self, because current self did just that. I love Mia. I love Mister Kindly. PROTECT THEM AT ALL COSTS. (Who am I kidding. Everyone is probably going to die by the end (-glares at Jay Kristoff while simultaneously offering sacrifices for Nevernight 3-)

Check out my reviews for Nevernight and Godsgrave!

2. Sleeping Giants & Waking Gods – Themis Files by Sylvain Neuvel

Another series that took me by surprise and I don’t hear a lot of talk about – maybe because it isn’t YA? But this BLEW. ME. AWAY. LISTEN TO THE AUDIOBOOK. It’s told with a full cast for all the characters and it feels like a tv show or movie or podcast more then a book and I LOVED THESE BOOKS and cannot wait for the final and 3rd book, Only Human, out in 2018!

Lord of Shadows

3. Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare

Are you surprised there’s a Cassandra Clare book on this list? If she releases a book, its going to be in my Top 10 of the year. I’ll just say this – I’m with you Emma in wanting that hot faerie threesome.

Caraval

4. Caraval by Stephanie Garber

I read this book in early 2017 and it still stuck with me! I met Stephanie Garber at Book Con and she is just the sweetest person EVER. I was worried this story would feel like something I’ve read before but it didn’t! It felt unique and its own twists and turns. Loved it and looking forward to Legendary in 2018!

Geekerella

5. Geekerella by Ashley Poston

I FEEL SO AT HOME READING THIS BOOK! My inner fangirl put onto a page!!! I relate SO MUCH to Elle in this book! From 2006-2016, I went to at least one anime con a year – so I was living that con life. Living the fangirl life. This book is so relateable as a fangirl and being in a fandom and I laughed, I loved it, and Ashley Poston is the sweetest. I met her at Boston Teen Author Festival and we had a great conversation about animes like Fullmetal Alchemist (which will forever be my #1). She is just like us and that makes me love her even more. CAN YOU TELL I LOVE THIS BOOK?

GGTVAV

6. The Gentleman’s Guide To Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

Young Tom Riddle/Voldemort from the Harry Potter movies reads this audiobook. If that doesn’t convince you to listen to this, I don’t know what will. Frolicing across Europe! LGBTQ+ rep! SAILING SHIPS! (Literal ships.) Such a fun and memorable read.

A Semi Defnitive List

7. A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares by Krystal Sutherland

This book wasn’t talked about as much as I wanted it to be but this was SOOOOO GOOD. I’m sold on Krystal Sutherland’s writing and will read anything she writes in the future! This deals with mental health in a funny but realistic way of having Esther’s entire family be “cursed.”

Check out my review of Semi-Definitive List!

They Both Die

8. They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera

Spoiler: They both die at the end.

Born To Run

9. Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen

Say whattttt? Yes, I can read books outside of YA. And occasionally I do. I grew up listening to The Boss, thanks to my dad, so when this book came out, I jumped right on the audiobook, read by Bruce himself! And actually, as soon as my dad saw I was listening to this, he asked to listen to it too! So I got him a copy of the CDs from the library and wouldn’t you know it, he finished it before I did! This is a fascinating story of a well know musicians life and its not just the pretty parts. He talks about the dark parts of it too – deal with depression and how its not always easy. This was incredible and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in music at all.

Unfiltered

10. Unfiltered by Lily Collins

I wish I had this book when I was a teenager. And now I want to give this book to every female I meet – young or old, you can learn something from Lily’s experience. She reads this audiobook herself and I love when the author reads their own life story. She is so open and real about her past romantic relationships and how they didn’t always work out, her eating disorder and how she overcame it, and her current and upcoming work as an actress! Very wonderful read and you should all read it.

Well! That was difficult to pick JUST 10 books! If you were curious, these are all the books I read this year (Thanks Goodsreads!)

    1. I was apprehensive about Caraval too but it was fantastic and a perfect way to start 2017 for me!
I hope you get to Nevernight soon and like it!! It took me a little while to get into it but once Mia arrives at the “school” is when it starts to get good so I always tell people give it until then! I even struggled in the beginning but SO WORTH IT!!!!

    1. Thanks for reading! I hope you love GG! Such a fun read~ I also hope you can read and enjoy Nevernight soon! It honestly took me a little while to get into it – the world was complicated at first but once Mia arrives at the school she’s going to, everything starts to make sense – so if you read it and are confused at first don’t give up! It does make sense and is SO WORTH IT!!
