November 15, 2022 marks the start of a new year at Hogwarts. Welcome Year 4 of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child! This was the first performance of the new cast. And I already love them so much!!!
I’d also like to disclaimer that JKR does *not* profit off of Cursed Child ticket sales based on research, which is why I continue to see it. I assume she still gets a flat rate fee to use the characters, similar to how Universal Studios pays her a flat rate for Harry Potter world, but similarly buying a ticket to Universal does not directly profit JKR. She will get that flat fee regardless of how many Universal tickets are bought.
I’m going to try and be as honest and open in my reviews as I can. Please note these are my personal opinions and I’m always open to discussions!
Show Name: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Show Type: Play
Location: Lyric Theatre, NYC
Dates Seen: Tuesday, November 15, 2022
If you’ve already seen the show, I highly recommend seeing it again with Year 4. This cast makes the show feel so fresh and new, even to me who has now seen it 30x.
Most of the adults stayed on and it’s the “kids” who are new. This cast brings a new level of innocence to these characters I haven’t felt in a very long time, especially in the beginning of the show. Maybe it’s because a lot of them are younger than the previous cast or making their Broadway debuts with these roles.
Oh yeah and the show feels at least 10x gayer than it did before, and that’s saying a LOT. I’m so mad at myself for not bringing a notebook to take notes (yes, really) during the show so here’s some of what I remember.
There were a LOT of minor line changes that I noticed. Nothing major, but I’ve seen this show enough I know the lines and there were some changes. There were some blocking in scenes that were new too, just where they were standing and such. It was interesting to see something I knew so well changed up…
Also during the first time change, Albus now stays in Slytherin. He doesn’t get sorted in Gryffindor in this alternate world. So those lines were obviously omitted (must’ve been interesting for Steve to un-learn those lol).
Thoughts on Year 4 cast first.
Joel Meyers as Albus – I love him. He’s reallyyyyy good and I’m so excited to see him a TON more this “year” of Hogwarts. I can’t wait to hopefully meet him at stage door too.
Erik C. Peterson as Scorpius – I love him too. I have high expectations for Scropius and Erik did amazing. He plays it completely differently than Brady did so I’m excited to have a year of Erik Scorp!
Imani Jade Powers as Delphi – she’s sooooo good!!!!!! I wish Delphi had a bigger part in this new version of Cursed Child, Imani is great and she does the innocent thing so well in the beginning so its even better when she…..well, you know.
Maya Thomas as Rose – I thought I might’ve seen her as an understudy for Rose but I can’t find it in my notes now but I’m already enjoying her Rose!!
Brittany Zeinstra as Polly/Myrtle/Lily Potter Sr. – I already follow her on IG and she seems like she’s going to be a lot of fun. Her Myrtle is so fun and I can’t wait to see if she changes it up during her run!
Irving Dyson Jr. as Craig Bowker Jr. – ok normally I wouldn’t comment on Craig but wow does Irving bring a new level of SASS to this role and I AM HERE FOR ITTTTTTT!!!
Spencer LaRue as Cedric/James Potter Jr/Sr. – I literally forgot Spencer was promoted to full time Cedric/James so when he walked out on stage I was like, “-squints- Is that…Spencer?!?!” it was a nice surprise LOL. I love Spencer so very happy for him (but still hope to see him as Scorpius again, loveeee his Scorpius!)
And Rachel Leslie will be Hermione until at least January 15. I’ve seen her on before and really like her Hermione so I’m excited to hopefully catch her a few more times!
Now let’s get into the scenes.
Godric’s Hollow scene (I have a lot to unpack here):
When they see Bathilda Bagshot, Scorpius is standing next to her door and literally falls on the ground. Then for his “Wow. Squeak. My geekness is a-quivering.” he literally jumps in the air and delivers this line so well, my heart was so full! This Scorpius is very excitable, its very cute.
As they’re trying to figure out how to get a message to the future, Scorpius says, “Stand over the baby — and just repeatedly shout HELP. HELP. HELP. I mean, it might traumatize the baby slightly.” Scorpius is holding onto Albus’s shoulders while saying that, which I never saw in the past. They also sit a lot closer together to begin with. Whereas in the past they sat further apart and when Albus scoots closer as he says, “No offense, but I’d choose someone massive and really great at magic”, now they’re pretty close to begin with. They were looking at each other with their faces close together, you could tell early on these characters like each other.
When the adults come to Godric’s Hallow and Draco goes, “We can hug too if you like” – this Scorpius is hesitant and shy at first and then gradually goes into Draco’s arms in an embrace. I miss the jump hug from Year 3 but I am curious to see how this might evolve!
During the church scene, I noticed Steve (Harry Potter) fumble a bit with his lines probably because they were slightly different than he was used to, specifically about the “specific love” lines. The feeling was still the same but it was said differently. There was a line Ginny said in the church scene too that was new and wasn’t there before but I can’t remember it offhand.
At the very end when Scorpius/Albus are talking on the stairs and Albus says his dad is coming up and they’re going for a walk, the actors both move to the very bottom of the stairs – this is new, they used to be more towards the top, but now Albus is on the 1st or 2nd step and Scorpius is on the ground. When they hug again and the whole “I wasn’t sure if we hugged in this new version of us”, (I think) Scorpius wraps his arms around Albus and in the past, Albus just stood there with his arms at his side, but this Albus embraces Scorpius back and sort of rests his head in the crook of Scorpius’s neck. And its a very long hug. Longer than ever before. (I could have it backwards, I forgot to take notes, but you get the idea) and. AND. WOW. THE LEVEL OF CLOSENESS. MY HEART FOR THESE CHARACTERS. The gayness level intensified. I ship it even harder now.
I really love the Year 4 cast and can’t wait to see them a ton!! Our journey has only just begin. Wizzo Wizzo Year 4!
