Audiobook Review: ‘The Romantic Agenda’

It’s June which means Pride Month, and what better time to finally pick up Claire Kann’s adult debut novel, The Romantic Agenda, featuring an asexual protagonist? I loved this one.

Title: The Romantic Agenda
Author: Claire Kann
Series: Standalone
Genres: Romance, Contemporary, LBGTQ+

Goodreads Summary

Joy is a thirty year old woman who is confident in herself and her looks and isn’t afraid to show it off. She’s also been in love with her best friend Malcolm for the past 10 years, but he doesn’t seem to feel the same way about her. They bonded in college because they both identify as asexual, but while Malcolm has found romantic relationships, Joy has always just been the “best friend” off to the side with no romantic prospects while she still has feelings for Malcolm.

Malcolm invites Joy to a weekend getaway with him and his new friend Summer, a girl who he happens to like, and her ex-boyfriend, current friend, Fox. Four friends just having a nice weekend away, what could go wrong? Joy and Fox decide to “fake date” each other to make Malcolm jealous and help him realize he really does like Joy. It’s the perfect rom com plot and I loved this story!

My favorite part about this story is that both Joy and Malcolm identify as asexual but show it in different ways – this book shows that there isn’t one way to be ace, its a spectrum. Malcolm enjoys having sex with his partners while Joy isn’t opposed to it, but it isn’t her end game and she won’t sleep with someone on a first date.

Joy is also on an instagram-esque site where she’s sort of an influencer with a large following, and often shows off her many fashion outfits, sometimes revealing. She lets it be known that just because she enjoys showing off her sense of style and her body doesn’t mean that gives anyone a right to her body in whatever way they want – it’s still her choice. And I admire that so much.

This book has everything you would expect from a rom-com – except on page sex. Joy and Fox do end up getting cozy but it doesn’t go all the way – as that isn’t something Joy wants – but she does enjoy kissing and touching. This is such a different kind of romance book and I truly loved it.

I thought the narrator was great and had a pleasant voice to listen to! I didn’t feel like I missed anything or gained anything by listening, so if you enjoy audio, give it a listen! If not, thats ok too!

My Rating:

If you’re looking for an adult romance novel with fake dating AND an asexual protagonist, look no further, Claire Kann is the author you want to read! The “adult” aspect of this book is mainly the characters ages and openly talking about topics like sex, where as young adult wouldn’t. I highly recommend this novel!
