Let’s Talk Bookish: What makes you pick up a book?

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme, hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books & Dani @ Literary Lion, where we discuss certain topics, share our opinions, and spread the love by visiting each others’ posts.

This week is another topic I really enjoyed: What Makes You Pick Up A Book?

What makes you pick up certain books? Is a pretty cover enough?

Truthfully, yes, a pretty cover will often times make me pick up a book! I really do judge books by their covers, so covers are very important for me. I pick up a book if I’ve seen it around bookstagram and twitter a lot, or if I see a lot of friends adding it on Goodreads. (Side note, want to be friends on Goodreads?) Word of mouth is important in the book community so the more I see a book around, the more curious I will become about it.

Another reason I pick up books – authors I already know and love or, an author I love recommends a book. I will often then go look it up myself and if I think it’s interesting sounding, give it a try myself!

Do you check for good reviews?

Often times it depends on the book. Sometimes I like going in without knowing what others are saying or even what the book is very much about! I’ve found some of the best books going in blindly like that, and it seems to work for me. Hyped up books are rarely books I enjoy. If EVERYONE is talking about it, chances are, I know I won’t like it. I’m weird in that there needs to be some buzz around a book, but if theres too much buzz, it overhypes it up for me and is usually a let down. There’s a very fine line for me – which is why, like I said, I prefer to go into books blindly.

More often than not, I’ll only check reviews if I’m not liking a book, to see if others didn’t like it as well, or if it gets better. I’m the person looking at the 1 and 2 star reviews more often than the 4 or 5 star reviews.

Is the synopsis important?

Same as above – it really depends on the book for me! I like to know a little bit about what I’m getting into, but I don’t like to know too much. Synopsis is usually just enough of a taste for me to know if I might like it and am willing to give it a chance, without giving too much away!

Do you look for diversity or #ownvoices?

Yes, most definitely! I’m always interested in reading more diverse and ownvoices books! I feel like I learn a lot and enjoy reading books that way. I like to read a variety of genres and tend to switch genres between books, and diverse books I read are usually contemporaries, so I try and read them as often as possible.

Do you have autobuy authors?

I don’t buy books all that often to be honest, I just don’t have the room for physical books! I am a big fan of my local library and of the digital library with audiobooks – so yes, in that sense, there are “auto place a hold” or “auto check out” authors for me, ones I will listen to their next book without a moments hesitation.

How about you – is there a certain spark that makes you pick up a certain book?
