Audio Review: ‘The Devouring Gray’

This book was super hyped on Twitter and I was so glad when the library got the audio in!

Title: The Devouring Gray

Author: Christine Lynn Herman

Series: The Devouring Gray

Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult, LGBT, Fantasy–Paranormal

Goodreads Summary

This book was okay! It gave me massive vibes from other books I’ve read recently but I can’t place the names, darnit. Basically there’s a girl who returns to a town where her family is very well-known: aka a founder from the town. These founders use magic to help protect the town from the Gray and that is the long and short of it. I liked the elements of magic here as well as the development of the characters throughout the story! Many of these characters are just reaching the point where they are about to take their of-age challenges to come into their full powers. There are many twists and turns in this book that I was certainly not expecting. It’s a small town where everyone knows everyone and when someone comes in that they don’t know well, it causes a lot of controversy. Unfortunately, Violet is on the other end of that and she handles it surprisingly well. There is also LGBTQIA+ rep in this book and I really liked that too!

All that being said, I wasn’t in love with the book. I liked the narrator and it was nice to have this short book read to me. I think this was simply another case of a book being hyped that I couldn’t totally find myself loving. I think this is a duology? So I will be interested to read the next one and see what happens after the penultimate ending of this one.

My Rating:

I would recommend this to fans of a contemporary-like fantasy and aren’t afraid of a little magic!
