Audiobook Review: ‘The Land I Lost’

Me at the beginning: “I mean I like Malec alright but they’re not like my OTP -shrug-“

Me literally 5 minutes into the audio: “PROTECT THIS FAMILY AT ALL COSTS. I REPEAT: ALL. COSTS.”

I didn’t realize how much I loved and appreciated Malec until this very moment. This is hands down my favorite Ghosts of the Shadow Market novella. This is also the longest of the novella’s thus far (audio was 3.5 hours!), which might have influenced my opinion – this felt like a full story.

Spoilers for The Mortal Instruments & Tales of the Shadowhunter Academy series.
I will put these spoiler warnings before all Ghosts of the Shadow Market reviews, but a rule of thumb in the Shadowhunter world is – if you aren’t caught up, read it in publication order.

Title: The Land I Lost
Author: Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan
Series: Ghosts of the Shadow Market #7
Rating: 5/5

Goodreads Summary

I forgot how much Magnus can make me laugh. This novella was full of quotable lines that had be rolling laughing! By the end of Tales From The Shadowhunter Academy, Magnus and Alec have adopted a blue warlock baby whom they name Max. Now, Max is 2 years old and asking for a brother or sister constantly.

“Bring back brother, or a sister?” Max hoped.

“Not getting a baby. Going to Sephora. There are no babies at Sephora.”

As mentioned, this story is the longest of the novella’s thus far and I definitely appreciated that. There is quite a bit of foreshadowing in here for things to come in The Dark Artifices, but nothing is explicitly spoiled so you’d be ok if you haven’t read that series yet.

Alec is summoned to a mission in Buenos Aires and is accompanied by Lily Chen, now head of the New York vampire clan. Alec can’t speak Spanish which leads to some fun translations by Lily. Jem and Tessa are also in Buenos Aires on a mission of their own – to find the lost Herondale Jem has been searching decades for.

We see the after affects of the Dark War on the Buenos Aires Institute and it isn’t pretty. It’s a reminder that in desperate times, those who are corrupt can more easily come into power – and it’s a sad fact of the real world too.

“Anyone who says women are weak is afraid they’re too strong.”

I love seeing more of Jem and Tessa’s relationship in the present time. I love seeing Alec’s devotion to Magnus and Max and needing to be worthy of going home to them by doing the right thing. And Lily Chen might just be my favorite underrated character of the series. Her nicknames for Jem are getting better and better – even Tessa appreciates them!

Lily caught Jem’s glance at her, “What are you looking at, you delicious peanut butter and Jem sandwich?”

If you’ve read The Dark Artifices, it’s not surprise how this story ends – but I really enjoyed seeing what led up to that moment! It was predictable but in the best way possible.

Audiobook Thoughts
I LOVED this audiobook narration! I thought she was fantastic and had the perfect voice. Even though this story focuses mainly on Alec, I had no issues with the narrator being female. I really enjoyed this one and would recommend it as audio. This audio was 3.5 hours long, the longest so far of these novellas, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Recommend?
YES, this feels like an important story to read before we get to Queen of Air in Darkness IN LESS THAN A MONTH -screaming!!!- Highly recommend reading this beforehand! -slams fist on table- I need answers about that lost Herondale!!!

As with The Bane Chronicles and Tales From The Shadowhunter Academy, all of these short stories will be published in a bound book, expected in 2019. The bound book will also feature two stories not being released as e-books! (Somebody remind me I need to read those!)

I need QoAaD and The Last Hours already. My Shadowhunter feels are going through the roof! I’m so glad I’m reading these before QoAaD – this is definitely getting me back into the Shadowhunter world~
