Audiobook Review: ‘The Wicked Ones’

As we are quickly approaching the conclusion of Ghosts of the Shadow Market novellas, I feel like the stories are becoming more important. This one in particular feels like it will play a very important role in Queen of Air and Darkness. AKA I need a new family tree because I can’t keep everyone straight, especially these Herondales!!!

Goodreads Summary

Céline Montclaire (later Céline Herondale) is someone we don’t know much about. We know she’s Jace’s mother, Stephen Herondale’s second wife, and Valentine had her killed before Jace was born and he raised Jace as his own. Not gonna lie, with all the Shadowhunter world information, this isn’t always in the forefront of my mind. It’s hard to keep track of!

But this is a story of Céline as she just joined the Circle and sent on a mission with Stephen Herondale and Robert Lightwood. I enjoyed getting a little more background information on all three of these people, it’s always interesting to me to see them before we first met them or heard about them. Céline, poor girl, didn’t have the best life and it’s sad to know she dies young as well. She has a upper-middle class upbringing on the outside, but everything is not as it seems, and I pity her.

Another important part of this story was Brother Zachariah discovering the “lost Herondale” we’ve been hearing so much about! I have a feeling this person (or rather, their child, as this novella is set in 1989) will be important in Queen of Air and Darkness. What I could really use is an updated Shadowhunter family tree. As they say, history is written by the victors. Or at least, what is known. This “lost Herondale” can throw a wrench into things and I can’t wait to see where it goes!

Audiobook Thoughts
I like this audiobook. As I’ve stated previously, I prefer female voices and this is no exception, I felt the voice was perfect for Céline. Feminine and wanting to hold her own, yet still a little unsure of her place in the world. I loved this audio, would recommend!

On the surface, this story doesn’t appear to be super important. But once you read it, I have a feeling some of the information we learn in this novella will be vital in Queen of Air and Darkness. I would highly recommend reading this one before QoAaD! Especially for that information about the lost Herondale.

As with The Bane Chronicles and Tales From The Shadowhunter Academy, all of these short stories will be published in a bound book, expected in 2019.

How do you feel about Céline? Or how do you feel about Valentine? Geez, just when you think the guy is gone for good, here he shows up again!
