Audiobook Review: ‘Son of the Dawn’

I’ve fallen a bit behind with Ghosts of the Shadow Market novella releases, but that just means I can read multiple stories at once, and post multiple reviews back to back!

Spoilers for The Mortal Instruments & The Infernal Devices series.
If you haven’t finished both series, don’t read this short story and don’t read my review! 🙂 (No spoilers for Dark Artifices series.)

I will put these spoiler warnings before all Ghosts of the Shadow Market reviews, but a rule of thumb in the Shadowhunter world is – if you aren’t caught up, read it in publication order.

Title: Son of the Dawn
Author: Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan
Series: Ghosts of the Shadow Market #1
Rating: 3.5/5

Goodreads Summary

Things I didn’t realize going into this: All stories will feature Brother Zachariah and the Shadow Market in some shape or form in some time period. The location/time period will be stated in the beginning. Now that we’ve covered that, onwards!

I’ll admit, this probably won’t be my favorite of the stories. I was excited, we get to learn about Jace first coming to New York and meeting Izzy and Alec yay! But, the story was less of that then I thought it would be. This story had more Raphael Santiago and Lily Chen (both vampires, incase you forgot!) than I expected. I love Raphael. So much. So I was very excited to learn more about him, even if it’s just a tiny bit of information. I didn’t know how much I loved Lily Chen until this very moment. Her numerous nicknames for Brother Zachariah are hilarious!

These stories are really going to make me dig deep into my Shadowhunter world knowledge, I know it already. I’ve been reading this series for how many years now? At least 5-6 years, if not longer. There’s a LOT of books. There are a lot of characters. I can tell you everything happening in Lord of Shadows but if we go back to City of Bones… gets foggy, ya know?

There was a lot in here that had me squealing with nostalgia, memories, and already having the knowledge of what happens to Jace in The Mortal Instruments, it was a great feeling. I did enjoy this story, and I will enjoy all the stories I’m sure. But this one isn’t a very remarkable one to me.

Memorable Moments:
– ”Brother Mackariah” “Brother Lipsmackariah” and many more. Oh Lily Chen YOU SLAY ME.
– Rapahel’s asexualtity put out there YES MORE OF THIS
– MAGNUS mentioned only….but I’m hopeful to see him in another story.
-Children Alec and Izzy~ my heart~
-First mention of Izzy suspecting Alec is gay but keeping her brothers secret, bless the Lightwood siblings
“Once you go Zachariah, you never go backariah.”
-Child Jonathan/Jace needs a hug.

Audiobook Thoughts
I wasn’t a huge fan of this narrator. It was a decent narration and very quick, but I wasn’t in love with it and I wish I had read it instead. I would skip this one as audio and read the story – it’s short!

If you are a fan of the Shadowhunter world, then yes, you should read this. Do you NEED to read this? As of right now, I don’t know. This first story seems a bit unnecessary. Nice, but not required to understand the world.

As with The Bane Chronicles and Tales From The Shadowhunter Academy, all of these short stories will be published in a bound book, expected in 2019. We’ll see where the rest of the stories lead!
